Research Focus
My project focuses on development of a new Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Implant. Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, primarily due to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). I work on Glaucoma implant that aims to effectively lower glaucomatous IOP while maintaining balanced aqueous humor (AH) outflow. Additionally, it is designed to prevent early hypotony and minimize surgical trauma. The device is minimally invasive, provides stable IOP control with reduced postoperative management requirements, and features potential mechanisms for live IOP monitoring, which all together lay a solid foundation for clinical translation.
Biography
Nurbergen Aitmukhanbetov holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from New York University Abu Dhabi. He specialized in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite Element Modeling (FEM), and fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulations, and medical device design. His current research focuses on developing a next-generation glaucoma drainage implant, using computational analysis and experimental verifications to improve fluid control and optimize surgical procedures and postoperative outcomes. Nurbergen’s broader interests also include application of robotics, AI, and Machine Learning toward biomedical technologies.
