Biography
Sarah Sahloul holds a Master of Science in Stem Cells and Regeneration from the University of Bristol and a Bachelor of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology from the United Arab Emirates University. Her research bridges biology and microengineering, focusing on microfluidic platforms for biological applications, including quantifying muscle force in Caenorhabditis elegans neurodegenerative models, a microfluidic platform for imaging mitochondrial dysfunction in C. elegans under hyperglycemic conditions, and enriching extracellular vesicles via ion concentration polarization (ICP) for liquid biopsy applications. More recently, she has gained experience with microfluidic devices for generating uniform 3D spheroids under continuous perfusion. Her current research advances organ-on-a-chip platforms, including alveoli-on-a-chip systems that replicate the mechanical and biological microenvironment of the human lung for drug screening, and a microfluidic device that integrates ICP with brain organoids to modulate ionic microenvironments and investigate how ion depletion influences neuronal activity, with potential applications in pain modulation.
